My Journey of Loss and Rediscovery

In the realm of life and investing, it can be a bumpy ride. In my recent journey through the volatile tides of the stock market it has etched a profound lesson into the core of my being. The crash of March 2020 in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic proved to be a watershed moment for me. It lead me astray from my investment philosophy and into the tempest of financial uncertainty. Fear overcame me. The losses I incurred did not occur immediately. It was the opportunities I lost such as selling Tesla and Nvidia as their stocks dropped, but then buying less favourable and well run companies that was my deepest failure. As peaks hit in 2021 the sky seemed to be the be the limit with my portfolio peaking over $400k USD, but the party was up in April and I began to watch without realizing my portfolio crumble. It went as low as $150k USD, below my principle and setting me back a decade. Running deep into the hundreds of thousands—emerged as stark reminders of the pain that often accompanies growth and learning. Yet, within this crucible of financial setback, I’ve begun the arduous journey back to my foundational principles, though the scars of loss serve as constant companions.

The Resilience of Leaders

We should seek to find stretch in humble beginnings.

My reflection on personal failure finds solace and inspiration in the stories of individuals like Jensen Huang. Huang’s ascent from the humble beginnings of a dishwasher at Denny’s to the zenith of success with Nvidia encapsulates the essence of resilience and humility. His acknowledgment of failure’s omnipresence, even amidst monumental success, underscores a universal truth: the path to greatness is fraught with adversity. Huang’s narrative, shared with Stanford students, reveals a deep conviction in the character-building power of suffering, a message that resonates profoundly with my own experiences. As the old adage goes, “No pain, no gain.”

The Crucible of Character

There are many lessons in resilience from Nvidia’s CEO

Jensen Huang’s discourse on resilience, delivered to the eager minds at Stanford, illuminates the indelible link between character and adversity. As someone who navigated Nvidia through the brink of collapse in 1996 to unprecedented success, Huang embodies the resilience born from battling against the odds. His insight into the dangers of high expectations and the necessity of embracing failure as a prerequisite for innovation and success echoes my recent epiphanies in the financial arena. Huang’s advocacy for a “tolerance for failure” as a catalyst for experimentation and innovation serves as a guiding principle in my renewed journey through the investment landscape.
